Hello,

I hope somebody out there can help me. I have Brighstor 11.5 SP3 installed on Windows 2003, all service packed and up to date.

I have bought a Dell TL2000 fibre attached automated tape drive and I am having a hell of a time trying to configure this thing in brightstor.

In the Windows deive manager, two devices appear, one is an IBM ULT3580-TD3 and this appears under 'Tape Drives', the other shows as IBM Totalstorage 3573 Tape Library and shows under 'Medium Changers'.

Now, I could not get either to appear in the Brightstor Device configuration wizard, until I disabled the TD3, then both appeared, but I could only do something with the 3573, and only shoes 5 tapes slots.

I cannot for the life of me do anything with 3580, which I believe is the actual Dell TL2000. I'm just confused and do not know what to do with it all. If I go into the brighstor device screen, I see the 3580 listed underneath 3573 as it was a sub device, but when I click on it I just get one tape that says blank media.

Sorry if I have not been particularly clear, but I would appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance,
D.

Basically Dell is reseller of goods made by someone else. In this case it is an IBM library that they resell as a Dell. The Inquiry string in the firmware was not changed from IBM to Dell. ARCserve identifies devices based off the Inquiry string so it shows up as an IBM, no big deal.

ARCserve uses SCSI pass through instead of the OS device drivers so leave them disabled from within the OS Device Manager.

Next clicking on the drive will only show you info on the drive or the single tape in it because it can only hold one tape.

Check the filter view in the Device window because it sounds like it is setup to only show certain slots.

Hello,

Thanks for replying. My tape device holds 24 tapes. But since then things have got worse, I can no longer see the drive in Arcserve at all, and the tape drive is in a constant state of initialization. I think I am going to uninstall/reinstall the product.

D.

sounds like the Storport version of the HBA driver is being used and that opens up problems.

Without getting into a long explanation, with Storport the tape drive "must" be enabled.

Next to prevent problems caused by the Dell or IBM tape drive drivers install the Microsoft generic LTO driver.

update storport.sys from Microsoft

Delete the TapeEngine registry key
Hkey local machine, software, ca, BrighStor ARCserve..., Base, TapeEngine.

Thanks for replying David, I'm just about to shut everything down for an office move, so I wont get to try this until next week, but I will let you know how I get on.

Have a great Easter everyone.

Regards,
D
