Breaking up a PRI on a Norstar MICS

We are intending to install a MICS with PRI. The Polycom video conference machine is using 4 BRI lines which is fairly expensive. The representive from a local provider says that the PRI can be broken up using some extra B channels to run the video conference system. I thought that the PRI terminates directly onto the MICS?? So is there extra Norstar hardware I need or do you need the hardware before the MICS to accomadate the service? Thanks in advance for any input. Davey

The MICS BRI card can be used as either a trunk card, or to provide BRI loops to whatever equipment you want to (essentially, they get treated as stations.)

There are some documents out there for integrating videoconferencing equipment into norstar. I would be happy to send them to you if you supply some sort of contact information.

Thanks jkupski,

This is my first time doing PRI so I am a little nervous. I have been told by other installers that it is simple and all numbers are treated like DIDS directed onto intercom keys. I quoted a MICS with 6.1 with Digital trunk card, PRI enabler, Fiber Combo card. I assume this is all I would need to get PRI service going. The question about bringing the 4 BRI lines onto the PRI came up when the rep. for local service noticed they had a Polycom video conf. machine using BRI service. He recommended the cost savings to the customer and has seen other switches hooked up this way. If I need any additional hardware like a second services card, maybe someone could let me know.

Unfortunately for me I am suppose to have an answer for this by today 2 PM PST in a meeting.

I would appreciate that info jkupski or any other info from anyone. dru@mediantel.com

appriciate any feedback.

daveybc,

Email sent. If you don't receive it shortly, let me know and I will resend so you can make your deadline.

You won't need a second services card, but you will (obviously) need a BRI card. The files I sent should let you know which BRI card (there are several) you need.

the BRI S/T/U interface on the norstar must match the settings on the polycom

ivent setup using a BRI of the norstar - but have configured polycom video conferencing with ISDN lines from the CO ...it is fairly straight forward
the note from jkupski should help

The BRI & the PRI are 2 seperate cards. If I understood correctly he is wanting to split out some channels from the PRI circuit to use with the Polycom this way he can cancel his BRI circuits. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hawks,

I believe you're correct. What we're talking about is using the MICS to deliver BRI circuits to the equipment instead of trying to break up the PRI.

Don't the MICS have a built in CSU/DSU just for this type of application?

Thanks for the imput everyone. I now know I need a NT7B87GA card. This is for making BRI connections off the MICS and it is expensive. I now can be informative at my meeting in 35 minutes. Talk about leaving things to the last second. I can put the ball back into customers court.

Recieved the info jkupski, Thanks.

What now could hawks be right???? can anyone else confirm. 31 minutes and counting. I have to leave or I will be late.

Sorry if I threw you a curve here.
The folowing is from the 8.0 handbook but I don't have an installer guide to look at.

The CSU/DSU functionality is integrated in the Modular ICS 4.1 (or greater) software and activated by the Bandwidth Allocation License. Having a built-in CSU/DSU lowers
equipment costs, makes installation easier and eliminates the need for external cabling. The Modular ICS is effectively the Small Site Gateway and terminates all Universal or Channelized T1 WAN services and distributes the Voice and Data applications appropriately.
