Hi,

Is there anyway to add a break to ALT text? I am required to add ALT to all images, but some of the images are required wordy ALT text. It would look much better if I could break it up to multiple lines. Thanks for the help.

None that I'm aware of. Remember this though, the alt will only be displayed for a short time then it disappears. For wordy alt text, the user would either have to read really fast or move his/her mouse off the image and back on again. Why does it need to be so long? Is this something that could be solved by placing a small caption under or next to the picture? Kevin

Thanks for the response. At one point I thought I had read somewhere that it was possible. It has to be so long to comply with the American Disabilities Act. Ah, the joy of corporate development.

So how does that help comply? I other words, how does someone benefit from alt text? I'm certainly not questioning your work, I am just curious.

And yes, corp. web development can be a pain! Kevin

Apparently the machines used by the visually impaired "print" out text in braile. Have you ever viewed any of your pages using a text only browser? That shows you the information they would be getting. So if I have a graphic that contains a wordy caption, without the ALT tag they wouldn't have any idea what that graphic was telling them. If you want to give it a shot try using Opera 5.0 and you can select an option to not download any graphics. Its ugly but if its functional then you just captured another type of customer.

I see. How interesting. Perhaps you could put something in the alt like "the caption below describes the picture." Then place a caption below each picture.

Also, try posting this question in the JavaScript forum. Those guys are really good and know how to manipulate the browser a lot. Kevin

Did you try embedding \n in your alt text to make a line break?

I didn't notice this post (sorry LOL) till Tracy post an answer today. But I answered this question before.

Hope this helps,
