I am very familiar with NT/2000 and Netware. I recently had the opportunity to get involved in the Unix/AIX world. I would love a name of a good getting started book - like “AIX for dummies” or “AIX in 21 days!” - but have not found anything that seems beginner enough. I know how to use a few commands in Unix and nothing more. I am the poster boy for Unix Newbies..

Please help!

Hello Slinger,

There is a lot of AIX sites that you could visit to know more about AIX. These are just a few..

I also have a document by Stewart Watkiss (Unix - From New User to Technical Expert on RS6000). If you want to have it, post your email address. Hope the site helps.

I'm just reading a very good book:

AEleen Frisch
Essential System Administration 3rd Edition
O'Reilly ISBN: 0-596-00343-9

A very good approach to the UNIX-administration.
Every aspect of UNIX is explained in a common way.
After this, the author explains the way the method works
under different UNIX-versions.

Described UNIX-versions:
-AIX (4.x and 5L)
-FreeBSD
-HP-UX
-Linux
-Solaris
-Tru64

I like this style, because you have the ability to
learn several UNIX-variants in one step. Even if you're
not able to remind every command on every UNIX, you
have a central documentation, where you can have a quick look.

MusicSlinger,

Here are a few websites that should get you started:

UNIX (General)
- Dennis Ritchie's homepage (one of the founders of UNIX). Good information on origin and history of UNIX.

UNIX (Shell Scripting)

UNIX (System Admin)
- an extensive collection of system admin links

I hope these help!

Please note that a general Unix book is good, however, there are certain things within AIX that general Unix books will not cover, such as the LVM (Logical Volume Manger) and the ODM (Object Data Manger). Also, AIX uses both System V and BSD implementations, and for error logging you can use either the AIX implementation, or if you prefer the BSD logging; this goes with networking too, either AIX or BSD style.

As far as books, a good book is:
The AIX Survival Guide by Andreas Siegert and published by
Addison-Wesley, ISBN 0-201-59388-2.

Also go to the link below and do a search for AIX. This is the IBM Redbooks site and is a valuable resource:

The book mentioned previously by RudiVVC is a great book, so are these two:

AIX System and Administration Guide by James DeRoest (McGraw-Hill)

AIX 6000 System Guide by Frank Cervone (McGraw-Hill)

Thanks everyone! and thanks mushr00m.. My email is dauger@flagstar.com. I would appreciate it if you could still send me that doc!

Thanks again!

MusicSlinger,

You did ask for a book, but everyone seems to have forgotten the most obvious source for information about AIX -- this Tek-Tips forum! If you have a question, use the Keyword Search function and you will probably see that someone else had the question before you and someone answered it in this forum. Take a look at the FAQs, too.

Good luck.
