Bracketed Notes Suddenly Appeared

I imported some client material (a glossary of terms) into my Word 97 file. I noticed that on the screen strange bracketed notes are on each side of each term. For example, {xe "A Stock Merchandise"} A Stock Returns {xe "A Stock Returns"}. But these codes don't print out.

What are these codes? Are they some kind of cross-reference fields? Is there a way to stop them from appearing on the screen, short of manually deleting them?
