I'm just wondering. I'm trying to find a Laptop with a com port. Not having any luck in something I like. What do you guys use for getting into the switchs/routers? machine wise?

just like that huh? ..lol I figured some people might have these hidden machines

sadly that is the easy solution, no big secret that if you don't have a serial port on your machine, pick up the usb adapter.

Most of the Dell lattitude series come with a COM ports and I've no complaints with any of mine.

Also if you decide to go the adaptor route, I've had problems with the USB adaptors in the past, kinda hit and miss, if you ask me.

I'd recommend using the PCMCIA serial convertors, I've had alot more success with them.

The Dell lattitude 6500's do not come with serial ports =/ found out AFTER I just got mine... glad I have that converter... With the converters... do not buy them unless they DO have drivers with them. The ones that do not come with drivers I can never get to work...

Bought a tripplite usb adaptor and it came with a minidisc with the drivers on it , first time I have seen anyone use a minidisc. It works well though .

Prolific works with EVERYTHING I have found, including many flavors of Linux (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Mandriva, Fedora FC5, SuSE, Knoppix, Mint 6 and 7), as well as D0z3, Solaris.

BTW, Prolific comes with many drivers for different hardware, including VIA SATA RAID drivers, on a minidisk as well (Vipergg).
