Do you have a good reason to do so? That little box is an accessibility help for people who tab through links on pages ... taking away all visual clue to which link they're on may not be a wise thing to do.
And yet, yes, as a designer myself I know the feeling of "Accessibility Schmeccessibility" ... just make sure you've got a really good, outstanding, impeachable reason to go against such guidelines. Personal site? Go to town. Business, education, corporate? Keep it usable, or you'll feel the hurt of customers or employees getting irritated with you.
