Bowsing VPN Clent shared files with PPTP

I recently set up a VPN using pptp and a Billion 74xy router and it works like a charm. However being a noob to VPN I have a question for an expert after googling for hours and not finding a conclusive answer. I noticed I couldn't browse the clients shared directories from the server side. maybe this is normal? to test it I set up a different scenario and used the windows built in VPN and used port forwarding on a different router/location and connected the client, this also setup and worked like a charm. however it had exactly the same behaviour, you could see the servers network from the client, but could not see the client's shares from the server side.

can anyone tell me what is going on and if its possible to even do this and how do I achieve it?

P.S. i read about using the 'hosts' file but could not nail down a solution?

I read your post on the fact that you do not see any network shares. I am encountering the exact same thing. I have set up a PPTP connection to my home network. I get connected without problems. Then i would like to browse some samba shares on my network or ssh my webserver. Connected from my work network this is not working. When i use my smartphone it actually is. I suspect that this issue is caused by the network range used on both networks (work / home). In fact the gateway IP address is exactly the same at work compared to home. A guess that IP conflicts occur in such a situation. I have asked the router manufacturer for advise on a solution because changing my network range at home is a thing i would like to prevent.

Did you find a solution yet or are you, having read this, having other issues?

Can anyone give me some advise on a solution?

Firstly if you were on the LAN does it work? You need to rule that out firstly.
If not I suspect it is a firewall or authentication issue. most people that connect a home PC to a VPN via PPTP treat it as their work PC. The problem though is that these work PC's are configured by administrators to work properly with the server via security etc. You home PC will not be set up this way so it won't work even if on the LAN.

So like i said you need to check whether it works on the LAN first.

Hi Muckermucker, the problem was in fact what i already suspected: the ip ranges were conflicting. I changed my IP range which was a nice opportunity to rearrange things a bit. Thanks for you suggestion anyway.
