both intercom buttons ring randomly @ ext 10, no trunks in use.

I have a customer with a Partner ACS R5.0 with an Partner mail VS R5. The intercom buttons ring randomly at Ext 10. No other stations are affected.
 
You've probably added Ext. 10 to the Voicemail Hunt Group 7

Check #505-7-10 and make sure it is 2-Not Assigned
 
Does the display show anything?

X10 is not assigned to hunt group 7, only partner mail ports (2)
 
Then those are probably calls that don't clear when someone hangs up before they transfer.

Is the telephone service provider the RBOC or a CLEC? Is service being delivered via traditional copper pairs or by some other method? [ponder]

the symptoms could be caused as budbyrd describes. you have tried ttt's good solution. these symptoms are a fairly common user complaint of older loop trunk systems. does the user's pain warrant a serious solution?
