booting up a clone HD to another box

If the system has the same hard disk controller chipset (or compatible) then you should be able to boot in safe mode, but not in normal mode.
This will be OK for copying data off the machine (but remember you won't have network access unless the LAN cards are identical - in which case use safe mode with networking).
If the disk controllers are different, then the only option is to slave the hard drive into a different machine.

Probably 50% chance of it booting (I've found it will generally either boot or not - safe mode rarely a factor). If it boots, you can sort out any drivers 2k doesn't have natively. If it doesn't boot, a repair reinstall will sort it 95% of the time:-
