Booting problems

The system is about a year old. It has worked ok until a couple days ago. Customer reports that there was no warning. he just turned it on in the morning and got what we currently have. The hd light is lit as is the cd light.
I replaced cables and checked for master slave etc. on the drives and tried with no cd.
I have tried to boot it only with what is needed to start up. and I have switched out every component individually. ie change memory...no good so put old memory back. then change hd...no good so put old hd back etc

I have changed MB, Processor, Power supply, Memory, Hard drive and cables (all one at a time). But my startup (restarting)problem persists.

If I set the Bios to default settings I can't get past the "Verifing..." In Safe mode it gets past this but reboots at the first loading item in safe mode.
If I set the start up for the CD first with my XP Pro disk It goes through all the loading stuff up to "starting windows" and then reboots.

Short of building an entire new system with all new components...any ideas?

zestril5 - I have had similar problems to yours in the past. In my case, the first memory slot was bad. I left first memory slot empty, and started with memory slot 2.

I did try putting the memory in other slot on th MB (it only has 2) but that didn't help.

Reset CMOS either with a MB jumper, or by removing the CMOS battery for at least 30 minutes.

If no luck, then make sure the CMOS battery gives at least a 3 volt reading(or just replace it), and that the CMOS battery contacts on the MB are clean.

If still no luck, then see what happens with just the PS, MB, CPU, RAM, video card, and monitor installed, and the MB placed on a piece of cardboard.

Post your specs of the PC, I've got a notion that it might be just a simple thing like your GFX-card being flakey or off a notch... etc.

I had to get the system back to the customer. It was under warrantee and they were in a hurry.
I replaced the mb, processor, memory, PS and cables. I used the same HD and CD. System powered right up, and after self installing the new MB parameters, it ran fine.
I have kept all the other components and will put them in another case to see what happens. If I get the same problem I'll Post again.
