Setup all the remote boot from network stuff and when you key "N" to boot from network, and the windows 2000pro remote installation starts, the dos like version of win2000 finishes and when it goes to start the graphical part of the installation, the screen goes black (like it was going to load it) and then just sits there... any ideal to what caused this, or how to fix it? Is it possible to get a walkthrough on the whole remote installation process?

Thanks alot!

Why are you pressing N to boot from network with a remote install? It needs to be connected to finish loading.

Or have you got past that point?

Try making the boot disk for remote install. The option is on the server that is set up for RIS and is found in the winnt directory. The file you are looking for is the rbfg.exe.
Boot the remote client with the disk and hit F12 when prompted and dont forget to remove the floppy before it gets to the reboot stage.

yeah i did that part.. matter of fact I cant remote install without the floppy... so I start the install and it asks for username pass and domain... i type it in and it starts going through the install and after it loads the setup it just quits.. i have no idea... whats wrong with it really.

Thanks!

Well I made sure the floppy was out,

when is says: Starting Windows 2000
after about 1:30sec the screen goes black like the GUI was going to start, and then sits there.

Do I need to maybe have a script written? I saw something about a script right during the install.

Thanks

It sounds like your network adapter is not plug n play with Win2000's HCL. During installation, it's trying to initialize, and install the NIC, but if not on the list - cant configure it properly, and setup quits.

This is one of many possibilities - but it is common with RIS.

Well thats definately a start.

Is there a way around this issue?

Thanks.

The only way is to get a NIC that is on Windows 2000's Hardware Compatibility List. What NIC are you using? It may be another issue..
