I have a new P5 with AIX 5.3 that I'm configuring - my first AIX install, so apologies for the questions :(

There are two HMC ports on the back of the server so I plugged a laptop in via network cable into HMC1, then went into ASMI and configured the network. I then re-connected to the new IP address - again through HMC1.

However when I start the system it won't boot up. I discovered that if I add a monitor and USB keyboard in, then it boots up. I thought it was possible to boot this without a console, i.e. using the laptop as the console?

Thanks
Nick

Nick,

You don't need to connect and configure the network cable and ip address if you would like to use your laptop as console.

You need IBM serial cable. All you need to make sure that you are connecting to serial port. On laptop start-->programs ->accessories--> comminications --> hyperterminal , configure serial settings (buadrate, data, parity, stop bits). Then boot up AIX box, you should be able to go along by selecting this tty as console.
