Hi, my question is short :

Is there any way to boot on an external hard drive (Firewire, USB 2), even by using a floppy to load a boot loader ?

Think it depends on your motherboard (but not an area I've any experience in - I'm sure you'll get replies from some who are).

From what i have heard the newer MB have the option to boot from other devices, had never actually tried it but you would think with this option it should keep looking until it finds a boot code

And then there is the possibility of modifying the BIOS to do whatever you want.
