After trying to swap out a bad CD-Rom drive, I am unable to boot up past the Windows 98 screen. It just freezes! I've tried taking the battery out for a day and puting it back in. I've unistalled and reinstalled 98. I've even disconnected the CD-Rom drive and rebooted. I looked at each of the configuartion settings by comparing them to another Windows 98 machine. Each and every time I freeze at the Windows 98 screen and can't do anything but CTL-ALT-DEL or turn the power off. I am able to boot up in Safe Mode, but I still don't know how to solve the problem. Could I have left something unplugged when I put in the internal CD-Rom drive? It seems to be a problem with the hardware. I really don't know. This is out of my league.

A couple of questions:

1. Is the new CD-ROM drive on the same ribbon cable as another device, such as a hard disk, or is it standalone? If it is on the cable with another device, make sure one device is jumpered as "Master" and the other is jumpered as "Slave". If it is alone, make sure it is jumpered as "Single". The jumper settings are usually on the label on the device.

2. When the Win98 splash screen first comes on, press "Esc" - you can see what is going on in the background. Does this give you any indication where the failure is?

3. Boot to Safe Mode and look in the root of the C: drive for a file called "bootlog.txt". It is probably hidden so you'll have to turn on hidden files in explorer. Open the file, scroll down and look at the very last entry - this tells you the last driver that loaded. This may get you close to what the problem is as well.

Good luck - hope this helps... ;-) Bill

If you can get to safe mode, all is not lost.
In safe mode, remove EVERYTHING from device manager, restart, and let everything reinstall itself.
Usually sorts out all kinds of windows bugs.
If you've got a piece of hardware that's gone bad (bumped out of place, ESD damage, etc.) then this won't help, but it WILL let you know some hardware is toast. Cheers,

Restart Windows and hold down the F8 key to bring
up the Windows 9x Startup Menu. Select Step-by-Step Confirmation. Windows then initializes devices one
at a time and prompts you for a "Yes" or "No" before moving to the next device. A "No" skips that device's initialization.
A "Yes" should lead to either a message confirming the
device's initialization or an error message indicating initialization failure. So if Windows locks up,
at the very least you'll know which device was being configured and, at most, you may even find out
why. Regards

I've looked at the bootlog.txt. Here's some of the errors:

Loadfail = pnpdrvr.drv Failure code is 0002

Loadfail = c:\windows\fonts\dummy.lyt Failure code is 0002

[000D362C] ASD: failing Starting a device d=ISAPNP\SMC8416BBBF7FC1, rc=00000001 [000D362C]

* The last error in the bootlog.txt is the [000D362C] error.

The plug-and-play driver is not loading.
Run SFC and extract pnpdrvr.drv from the CD.
A font is not loading properly (just remove that particular font).
The last error, is a device by SMC, probably your ethernet card.
If you're not using it, disable in BIOS setup, otherwise, find and install the correct drivers. Cheers,
Jim

Thanks guys, I have tried a combination of all your suggestions and I am back up.....but. I had an external CD Writer that use to be attached to the USB port. Now I get a message saying my USB port is Disabled. I looked at F1 Config at startup and USP port is Enabled there. I am not familiar with running BIOS Setup or CMOS setup which the HP software suggested that I do. And as a side note, I cannot find pnpdrvr.drv anywhere on the hard drive or on the Windows98 CD-ROM. Someone else imaged these PCs and I am not sure if I have the correct Windows98 CD to work with.

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP! As you can probably detect, this is my first thread as a newcomer on this website.

Glad to hear it's up.
Just run the BIOS setup they recommend, it will show you the option to enable USB.
You may also have to remove it in device manager, restart, and reinstall the drivers for it.
The stuff MAY be in c:\windows\options\cabs or c:\program files\cabs if someone else loaded Windows.
Not having the right CD will cause these problems. Cheers,
Jim
