Hello everyone

I've got two 1140e phones, both with the latest and same level of firmware (0625C94). During the boot up, one gives out the jingle sound, but the other one is silent. Is there a setting on the phone to alter this as I can't find it.

Any help would be great please. It's not important, but more of a query.

Today, I've enabled SSH on one of the 1140e phones that has the boot up audio intro sound by doing the following method.

On the 1140e phone, I went into the configuration screen and selected option
2. Local diagnostics, then
6. Advanced Diag Tools using (color*set) 26567*738 and OK.
I just ticked the Enable SSH box and entered in a user name and password.

After logging in with a SSH client such as ZOC or PuTTY etc, I keyed on pdtHelp to list out all the commands and found this one of

PDT> showWavPlay
Audio intro is ON

What I can't seem to do, is to find a way of turning the boot up intro sound on or off via the IP phone or through SSH. I tried to see if FTP works, but that doesn't and I was wondering if there is a file that I can edit instead?.

PDT> ls -f

It might have been that an earlier release of firmware that I had and it may have had an option to turn the sound off and on. On the phone that didn't have the boot up sound, I was able to do a factory reset using the typical **73639 (MAC) ## etc when the phone was already in use. After the last "#" was applied, I got the "Rebooting" message.

During the boot up, the sound came back on again.
Is there a way of altering a file to control the boot up sound?.

I've been battling on and off for a few days with trying to find out how to alter the boot up bleep sound on the IP phones and have been learning about using the TFTP server whilst testing out different levels of firmware. I've discovered that using SSH access on my test 1140e phone shows that there has been many changes made to the different firmware level over the years.

I alway's kept away from TFTP as I never really had much luck with it. However, I've now done a guide that I hope some of you might like to read that explains in detail on how to change the firmware.

In my case, I've gone backwards and forwards from good old Nortel firmware to Avaya and back and also to some SIP releases and back again.

I know that some of you know this process, but some of you might find it useful if you happen to work on SRG sites and find that replacing or installing an IP phone with the wrong firmware can now be dealt with by changing it to match the CS1000 system.

Nicely put together. Well done.

We have a somewhat similar inhouse procedure for restoring firmware to a set that has a corrupt or bad firmware file. I suggest taking an older set or two and practicing upgrading and downgrading them just to get the procedures down. It is very possible to brick sets during a firmware download, and put them at a point where they cannot be recovered. That is why I would never recommend a nonprofessional attempt to do a firmware recovery. Most (if not all) normal firmware updates should be performed using the utility located in element manager, software, IP phone firmware. We have had to do manual updates to some sets that had very old firmware but that is definitely not the norm.

Were you ever able to remove the initial Nortel/Avaya splash sound? I wouldn't think that it would be possible unless you had a custom firmware file written and compiled that didn't have the sound in it.

Thanks Buddy and Wanebo

I'm still puzzled how I had previously done it on a set before and by using SSH into my 1140e set, I was able to discover that there is something in there as shown below at the bottom.

Can anyone tell me where I can obtain the provisioning files for any of the 11xx or 12xx Nortel/Avaya IP phones please?. I have a BCM 50 system and it looks as if there were files available for either the BCM or CS1K etc.
