Boot process bypassing Single-User mode

I have a customer whose O/S (SCO UNIX 3.2 V4.2) bypasses Single-User mode after hitting Return from the Boot: prompt.

The PC then gets stuck in a loop of "INIT: Command is respawning too quickly". If I can get into Single-User mode from the Boot: prompt, I think I have the best chance to figure something out (or at least back up some key files).

Any ideas please? Many thanks in advance!

try to boot using unix.old or unix.install at the boot prompt .
