Boot problem after adding second hard drive

I have a Compaq Presario 6000T running XP SP2 that came with a 120GB hard drive. I bought a Seagate 250GB hard drive to add as the slave drive.

I installed the second drive using the "Cable Select" jumper setting and attached to the gray connector in the middle of the cable. I was able to see it in Disk Management and successfully formatted it as a single NTFS partition and enabled it.

However, when I shut down the pc and rebooted it, it hung on the XP progress bar screen. After waiting for 10 minutes or so with no progress I shut it down again by pressing and holding the start button. Rebooting again brought me to the screen where I could select "Last known good configuration". This got me up and running a couple of times. Now when I boot it just hangs no matter what.

When I disconnect the second hard drive then the system boots normally.

Any ideas how to get it to work with both drives?

tseaman,

Try jumpering the second drive as slave.

Also check the main drive jumpering, I have seen some drives with a "master single drive" jumper selection. If this is the case reset to normal master.

Post back with what you find,or drive specifics

I checked the jumpers. Both were set on "Cable Select" and connected to the appropriate ultra ATA cable connectors. Since this was not working, I jumpered the boot drive to "master with slave present" and jumpered my second drive as "slave". This configuration booted up without a problem.

Thanks for your help.

Some "Name Brand" computers use proprietary IDE cables. Sometimes "master - slave - cable select", don't mesh with the real world! Glad you got it working, I've seen some systems that work with only their cables AND their drives.
