Hi, I am attempting to install Slackware Linux 8.1 on my PC and I am wondering what the most popular boot-management utility is out there. I have an old version of System Commander 2000, but it seems to have odd bugs with my 80GB hard drive.

Also, if possible I'm hoping there's a free one out there.

Thanks for any recommendations,
Will

I'm not sure what you mean but linux comes with 2 boot loaders, lilo and grub. Either one gets installed on the Master Boot Record (MBR) as part of the install process. They let you select from a list of OS's you may have on your system. You also choose a default just in case you're not around when it boots.

Slackware comes with LILO only. It's best to accept the default settings for the boot loader and let it run it's course, an install onto the MBR.

You can opt to not install a bootloader, then use the windows bootloader (if you are using windows). XSOL is another free bootloader, but save yourself the hassle and just let LILO do it's job.
