Hi all,

One of my LPARS comes up with error 0557 and I need to boot into maintenance mode to fix the corrupt filesystem(s)
I've DPLAR'd the DVD ROM to the affected partition and changed the boot order in SMS but when it boots, the drive spins a but and then goes back into SMS mode.
I've tried another 5.3 CD thinking that the media might be damaged but still no luck?

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks...

Have you tried the SMS option "Boot/install from"? Where you choose manually which bootdevice to choose - kind of a manual override of the stored bootlist.

Hi Guys,

I assigned the drive as Required on the partitions profile,
and then selected it on the SMS menu as the 1st boot device.

Perhaps it's a faulty drive?

I couldn't get this to work so I've used NIM to get into maintenance mode.

Thanks for you responses though. I'll check out the drive once I get the LPAR up...

From the HMC, does it say the lpar you are using owns the dvd-rom? I believe you right click on the managed system, then go to properies.

Can you see the dvd-rom in SMS when you list all the devices?

Thanks hirschaj, I'll check that out.

hfaix, I made the cd-rom a required physical device on the HMC and it did pick it up on the SMS bootlist menu.
It even spinned when during boot up but could not load the OS.

Now that the LPAR is up, I mounted the cd and it seems okay so the drive should be alright.

Strange one...

Thanks for the feedback...

Needed to install a Linux partition and I couldn't use NIM so I had to get the DVD Drive working.
Updated the machine microcode solved the problem.
Thanks hirschaj
