Hi all,

I have a Red Hat 4.7 and i need to see the boot logs.
This is my syslog.conf but the logs are empty.

And the dmesg not helping

$ more /etc/syslog.conf
# Log all kernel messages to the console.
# Logging much else clutters up the screen.
#kern.*
/dev/console

# Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher.
# Don't log private authentication messages!
*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages

# The authpriv file has restricted access.
authpriv.* /var/log/secure

# Log all the mail messages in one place.
mail.* -/var/log/maillog
linux 4.7

# Log cron stuff
cron.* /var/log/cron

# Everybody gets emergency messages
*.emerg *

# Save news errors of level crit and higher in a special file.
uucp,news.crit /var/log/spooler

# Save boot messages also to boot.log
local7.* /var/log/boot.log
authpriv.*,auth.* /var/log/btmp

Thanks

That's strange. Is your syslog service running? Try ps -ef | grep yslog to check, or service status syslog.

Is your /var filesystem full? df /var to check.

Is it mounted read-only for some reason? mount | grep /var and check for any flags other than (rw)

When you say dmesg doesn't help... does it give you any output at all? Or just not the information you're looking for.

Yes, the syslog is running and i restarted the service for the syslog. with the mount option no error. and when i say dmesg doesnt help is because there is no error theres.

And my issue is when i reboot the server it stops on the start up and i have to connect with a serial cable to the server and put Yes to start all the options, like nic card and all that.

Thanks

So it's almost like someone is typing 'I' for interactive startup?

Perhaps there is a problem with the keyboard attached to the server; I remember a similar post previously where a USB keyboard was causing a problem. Try disconnecting the keyboard perhaps and see if it boots cleanly?

When you have the serial cable connected, what are the messages immediately before the first question? A screenshot (perhaps using a mobile phone) may make it clearer.

the serial cable DB9 from my notebook to the server and there's when i can see the request for type Y to start.

I will check the usb keyboard thing thanks for the tip.

But the funny thing is after i get in the console with the cable i start the server and no issue, i reboot 3 or 4 times the server and no problem, i leave the server 2 days with out reboot , and there i have the issue when i reboot it.

thanks
