boot hang then black

so I did an install on a dual processor p4 600mhz with 512 RAM I gave my swap partition 700mb. Upon reboot it hung on enabling swap space at that point I thought maybe the scsi card I had in the machine might be confusing things so I took that out. now it hangs at a different spot:

currently I am trying knoppix to see if it will run linux off the CD. seems to run fine.

What distribution did you install? What are your machine specifications?

matrox video card
1 lan card
zip drive
maxtor 40 gig HD

What linux distribution though? Redhat (now Fedora), debian, gentoo, slackware...
