ive picked up an old AViiON AV3600 which has DG/UX installed. I want to run redhat on it.

the old SCSI CDROM in the system is broken so ive replaced it with an IDE one. is there anyway to boot from this drive so i can install Linux over the top?

There's always the old boot floppy with the cd driver on it. I'm not sure how RH will deal with the tsb card in that machine.. You might just want to take it out. (It's the card with 3 buttons on it). The card was used to emulate the SCM user interface from the old Motorola 88k machines that DG used to sell.

yeh ive taken the card out and bought myself a new scsi cd. the next problem is two scsi controller messages come up. the cd is picked up in the first one but not in the second with the six scsi hdds... also im wondering how old this server is seeing as RH may not be compatible with it...

I think this guy came out in the late 90's. It was an ALR box configured to DG spec. ALR called it a 6x6 revolution. It has an integrated scsi card that may or may not be connected to drive the scsi cd. Just trace the cable back from the Hotswap bays to see if it is going to the motherboard or to one of the pci scsi controllers. Bios needs to be enabled on the controller that you want to boot from. The others need to be disabled. You can usually get into the pci configs on the Adaptec controllers with a Ctrl A and Symbios controllers with a Ctrl C and Mylex is ALT R if you have one of those installed. Good luck.
