I have RedHat 6.2, and somehow lilo didn't get loaded. The only way I can get in is with the CD (in rescue mode).

I've found instructions on the web for editing /etc/lilo.conf -- unfortunately, it doesn't exist.

I found instructions for dd'ing the boot.img onto the floppy, and I get this error:

no space left on device
2259+0 records in
2258+0 records out

-this on both a used floppy with stuff on it and a brand new, formatted floppy.

I'm frustrated. Anyone know how to create a boot floppy? Or how to navigate around at the bash# prompt to manually input lilo.conf (since vi is not available in rescue mode)?

Thanks,

'mkbootdisk' will create a boot disk. To install LILO, just run /sbin/lilo.

OK,

I got a copy of tomsrtbt ( and I booted to it on a floppy and edited /etc/lilo.conf and then ran /sbin/lilo. It told me it was adding the boot images, and when I cat lilo.conf it looks right.

But somehow, it's not on my boot record (i.e.: Linux is ignored on bootup. It just boots directly into 98 without a prompt. How do I have to configure it so it is one of the boot options.

On my first installation, I had the choice of linux or dos. For my wife's benefit, I set dos (windows) as the default boot partition.

Now, after reinstalling, I have an XP partition as well, and I want lilo to take over from the beginning, giving me the choice of linux or dos. When I choose dos, I will get the choice between 98 or XP.

I think that I need to move my linux boot record onto sda1 somehow in order to effect this?

Thanks,

If you want to remove the NT Loader completely, you can delete the MBR with 'fdisk /mbr'. You can then configure LILO to boot into Linux, XP, or 98. You don't need two bootloaders.

*Make sure that you understand what I'm talking about before you blindly do this. This will remove the XP bootloader. You will only use LILO to boot into the 3 OS's from here on. Make a boot disk for XP just in case you can't get LILO to boot XP (unlikely). Here's a link on how to do this...
