I have a fairly new Dell running Win2k at my office. When rebooting it this morning it said that the WINNT\SYSTEM file was missing or corrupted. I tried to boot from my Dell Recovery Win2k cd-rom, but it would not boot. I then tried using an old-fashioned Win98 boot disk, but it does not recognize my NTFS partioned hard drive. One of the other pcs here is also running Win2k, so I tried running the makeboot utility from it, but when I try to boot with that disk I get the error message "File ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded." I've pretty much run out of ideas on what to do next. Can anyone please help me?

Check the BIOS settings for the CD-ROM and make sure it's bootable. Hope I was of some help...

If Cadwalader theory does not work, which it should, then try windows me boot disk...I found that it works.

The Windows ME disk is the same as the 98 disk EXCEPT the 'autoexec.bat' and 'config.sys' are full of I don't kow what...I use a 9X startup disk on a 2K box....as a matter of fact, I used it about 2 hours ago to start this big box (not really big, Celeron 600, 512MB RAM, running 2KPro) to start it after 6 days of uptime. Someone hit a pole and the power flickered and came back up for about 30 seconds and flickered again, and died, I wiated exactly 5 minutes, and shut everything down (2 boxes fed from a 500VA UPS: but that is because almost every morning between 5 and 8, the power dies and comes right back). When I fired up the 2K box, I couldn't log on. The PWD was "wrong"...but I knew better...so (after about a dozen attempts)I restarted with a startup disk made from a ME box, started in safe mode, and my PWD worked. I reset it and restarted normal. Everything is fine. (it's not the "spikes" in the power that caused that) There are 2 power strips, then a Lightening protection strip guaranteed for 50 grand and then an APC 500 VA UPS, and then another generic surge protector (the last one is so that there is enough sockets for everything). I live in the lightening capital of the world and so trouble so far.
OK...I went off on a tangent, forgive me. The windows 98 disk will give you the utilities to recover from bad stuff with 2K. You just have to know how to use them. (If you don't know how, there is always that thing..umm..I think it's "tek-tips.com" or something...you'll find it--I'm sure.
;-) Hope I was of some help...
