Hi,
Just trying to figure out whether or not win2k has a bootdisk option like win 98. What would be the proper procedure to install win2k, formating would take place from the dos prompt right,...
I know this might be tedious to answer so if any of you have any good links or suggestions just let me know.
Thanks
Steve

Set your BIOS to boot first from the CDROM. Insert the Win2K CD and reboot. When prompted boot from CDROM. Once the Setup beging just follow the prompts. If you are not going to dual boot Win2K and Win98 then I sugest formatting the hard drive with NTFS. Any questions just ask. James Collins

this will be a single boot system..
this might be silly but how do i format the drive with NTFS.

When you go through the prompts it will ask you if you want to keep the current partition or create a new one. Create a new one, then it will ask how you want to format it. One of the selections is NTFS. Need help just ask. James Collins

Normally id just keep going on myself but seeing that your so quick to answer, Ill ask.
This is a new HD, never been formatted yet.
Its a 30 gig IDE matrox. It came with an istallation disk.
Should I run the detup HD utility? then boot via the cd rom.
Oh and let me know if it matters that im using win2000 from a Compaq PC. It clearly is labelled as win2k but does the fact that it was intended for a compaq make a difference?
Hope not.

Steve

Dont run the HD utility. There is no use unless your computer is more than 3 years old. Also the fact that the CD came from a compaq computer may make a difference. You never really know untill you try. Since the drive is not formatted then the Win2K pro install will ask you if you want to create a new partition then format it. thats when you format the drive NTFS. James Collins

Youve been a GREAT HELP FOR ME TODAY!!

I came in this sunday just to get this fixed and without your help i would have just bought her a new pc! .)

Steve

If you decide to make the four boot disks they can be made by going to the run command and D:\bootdisk makeboot or open the cd in windows explorer and browse to the bootdisk folder and double click on makeboot.
It is also a good idea to make an erd after the install is finished and this can be done in backup there is a emergency repair disk option there.
