We have a computer here that is left running all day. all of a sudden this morning they came in and got a message...BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I created a start up disk from another win98 machine. I attempted to run a scandisk on the C:\ and it found no errors, but at the same time it went too fast. Is there a way to fix it or at least get into the drive and transfer the data to another hard drive? The user needs the data and we, unfortunately do not have any back-up system at the present time. Can anyone guide me?....thanks.

When you use the boot disk, can you see any content on the hard drive?

yes, but all i see is a number of exe files and com files such as scandisk, etc..I don't actually see any directories.

I think that you're seeing the ramdrive created by the boot disk. This means that your hard drive is not being detected at all. If you watch the text during boot, you'll see something like: diagnostic tools loaded on X, where X is the next letter after your physical drives. You could try entering the bios and try to autodetect the drive again. If that doesn't work, open the case and look for loose cables. Last you could add this drive as a slave in another compter. If none of the above works, you're out of luck unless you want to pay big $$ for a professional recovery service.
