What book do you recommend for someone who would like to learn in depth about writing formulas.please help

I think you need 2 kinds of books.
The first on Crystal like The Complete Reference Crystal Reports x.x by George Peck
and a SQL book...
For SQL Server I recommend The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL by Ken Henderson. He has a easy readying style, with heaps of real world usefull examples.

I also believe Ken Hamaday has some material you can buy which has useful formulaes
Personnaly, this web site is fantastic. You can get most of your answers by searching or posting a question.

That would depend upon the version of Crystal.

If you're just getting started, go with Ken Hamady's stuff.

The web is littered with resources as well.

This site is probably the best, and the FAQs here should help as well.
