I've got a question regarding a book that I'm making. Let me describe what it I'm doing and what my question is: I'm making a literary journal of about 100 pages (printing on a two colum landscape page) and I will be hand binding the pages together in groups of eight. My question is... does Indesign automatically layout pages for proper printing? To be specific, on page one, the first colum (out of four colums [two per side]) needs to have the title page (right colum). The second colum (to the left of the title page) needs to have page 24 (from the articles). On the reverse side, the colum paralleled to the title page must be blank, and the colum on the right of that needs to be page 23(from the articles). Do I need to manually set this up, or does Indesign automatically allign pages to be printed, folded, and bound? If this is confusing, I'm sorry, but I can't think of any other way to explain it. Thanks.

What you're asking, is does indesign impose the document for you?

Yes it does. But design it in readers pairs, i.e., from page 1 - 24

Not 24,1/2,23/22,3 etc.

That will drive you and anyone else insane.

Do it from page 1 - 24.

Then when you're happy with the design and layout choose File>Print Booklet

This is a mini imposition program built into indesign for printing in printers pairs.

If you need any more information or want any more help, please don't hesitate to ask.

...if in Indesign CS3 the option file > print booklet will allow for printers spreads to be created, 2 pages to view on the sheet...

...if in CS2 the function was known as Inbooklet SE via the file menu...

...depending on how you will be binding it together and the actual sheet size you are printing onto, the options are saddle stitch or perfect bound impositions...

...the printer you use also needs consideration, whether or not it handles duplex mode, if not then you will need to print odd and even printers spreads carefully to print on the other side...

...to add...

...if in CS2 the function known as Inbooklet SE via the file menu allows creation of another document, never used it, but from that new doc you could then specify on your print output settings to print odd and even spreads...

...personally i would probably tackle this scenario using acrobat pro print options by creating a pdf of the printer spreads...
