For Delphi newbies, I always recommend Marco Cantu's "Mastering Delphi ___" for whatever version you're using. There are good examples and it's well written.
Has anyone read Sams Teach Yourself Delphi 4 in 21 Days? I've seen reviews for it and while they have been generally positive, it does seem that many of the reviews say that it is not really for newbies. Being a newbie myself, I'm curious if there are any other recommendations besides Mastering Delphi and Sams, or if they are the best place to start. I'm also wondering how much help Sams would really provide to someone using a newer version of Delphi.
Have read Sams teach yourself Delphi 3 in 21 days. By the way, I received it when I bought Delphi 3 standard.
The term newbies is confusing?
Newbie in programming, or newbie in Delphi?
If you have programming experience, the book is very good. I had a fairly good pascal background and after six years of doing nothing with real programming, (unless you call writing logical formulas in a spreadsheet programming), I didn't need 3 weeks to get my way around in Windows programming with Delphi.
The next step was Marco Cantu. But this one I use like a reference. Just like a dictionary, when you need to do something, but don't know how, just browse through the book to get a solution.
Teach yourself delphi I would classify as a good novell, it has well defined chapters focussed on getting some task done.
I have it and I later (and to this day) found it very useful. But there is no way I found myself very proficient "in 21 days' from it.
I also have Delphi 4 Bible by Tom Swan which, together with the above I found most helpful.
By far the best I found to be Marco Cantu's Mastering Delphi 6 although some useful info to be found in the above two are not discussed.
From the combined use of all three I am seldom lost. At which times I find this great website ever useful with Steven van Els (and others too numerous to mention) forever being ready to help out!
I wrote an FAQ a while ago entitled Can you recommend any good books/websites for learning Delphi? (faq102-2794) in which I have outlined the resources I used to learn Delphi.
Hope this helps!
