Anyone, know how BOE-XI (R2) licenses are priced if you are using server-virtualization (eg. MS Virtual Server 2005, VM-Ware Server) rather than physical servers...?

Are those even supported platforms for BOE-XI (R2)...?

Thanks in advance.

BOE will run on VMWare. Search for "bo_statement_of_support_for_vmware.pdf" on the knowledgebase at
However, it's not really recommended for production environments. We have our Dev, QA, and Staging environments running the CMS on VMWare sessions, but the production CMS servers are they're own boxes.

In high-use environments, BO does not always play well with other VM sesssions - it's high processor use and high level of disk-swapping when generating reports means that it tends to hog resources on the machine where it's running.

A computer only does what you actually told it to do - not what you thought you told it to do.

Thanks for the advice.

We have been quite happy running our BOE-XI (R2) cluster on four (4) dual-processor servers under our eight (8) processor BOBJ license.

That hardware is coming up for "recycling" in the next 12 months, and our New physical server baseline is Dual Socket / Quad Core (8 - Intel Processors per physical server).

Don't feel like paying additional BOBJ license-costs, but also don't want to move the cluster down to a single physical server.

Need to figure-out the best "scaling/fail-over" plan for the new hardware without breaking the bank on new BOBJ licenses.

Hi,

VMware is fully supported (as the doc mentioned by Hilfy says) and I'm sorry to disagree but there is nothing against using it in Production. I have done MANY consultancy jobs for Business Objects as an employee or contractor and most of the time is was using VMware Server.

The only thing is they do not want to guarantee the info provided in the sizing guide: 0 17086742

Beside that the rules are the same. You may have a 8 CPU server, if 4 are allocated to BO, you need a 4 processors licence or a named license.

Hope it makes sense.
