I need some help with an intermittent BOE error we are getting.

The Error is
“Error
Unable to open file ~ce9604be3122ed03ao.rpt”

1. This error happens anytime during a session, i.e. opening the first page or going to the next page.
2. The error happens more frequently the busier BOE is..This error really happens alot when there are 80+ concurrent users.
3. We are using the Java implementation
4. This error happens on any report.
5. This is happening on saved Crystal Report instances. Which is 99.9% of what our BOE delivers.
6. Most of the time if the user closes the error and tries to get into the page again they are successful.

Thank You in advance for any suggestions you can provide!

Through what tool the users wants to open the instances? InfoView, OpenDocument or a Custom Tool?

Is the error reproducable through Java CMC?

And wich exact Version do you use (SP, HotFix, FixPack)?

Bleuys,

Thanks for your reply/further inquiry....

1. Our Users are using InfoView
2. This error is reproducable via the java cmc and java infoview
3. BOE Sp2, productivity pack and collaterals are installed on the server.
Nothing past SP2 has been applied in the way of patches etc..

Hi,
Are the FRS directories on the same server as the Job and Page servers?
If not, are those services running under an account that has full rights to those directories?

It sounds like you're just about maxing out your server. With that many concurrent users and hence number of simultaneous requests it's not surprising.

You could try increasing the timeout settings of the Input and Output FRS in the Central Management Console.

Possible other causes of performance bottlenecks could be:
1) System Database performance
2) CPU utilisation on the server running the FRS services
3) FRS Disk space, defragmentation and speed
4) Network bandwidth availability (if Filestores are on different server to BOE services)

Ultimately you may need more CPU and/or RAM resources to cope with your simultaneous load.

Read the boe_xi_r2_sizing_recommendations.pdf
document from the support.businessobjects.com website for more information on matching resources to your BOE system's utilisation.

What hardware specs does your BOE Server run? How many CPU's, how much RAM? What is the RAM consumption vs available RAM at time of the errors? Check via Task Manager.

Read the Windows Application Log for any useful error messages in relation to the BOE services.

Thanks to all who have replied for your suggestions. Monitoring of server load (CPU and Memory) did not uncover any bottlenecks.

Fortunately we have now resolved the issue by modifying the server's boot.ini file, specifically by removing the '/3GB' qualifier. Since doing so, we have not incurred any
“Error
Unable to open file ~ce9604be3122ed03ao.rpt” type errors, which had become frequent, though sporadic.

This Boot.ini setting is specifically referenced in the BOE XIR2 sizing guide under memory requirements.....and states:

It is NOT recommended that the /3GB boot.ini switch be used to Increases the size of the user process
address space from 2 GB to 3GB (therefore reducing the size of the system space from 2GB to 1GB) on a
Page Server machine. When the Page Server is rendering reports a high degree of GDI work (Graphical
Device Interface, a Windows standard for representing graphical objects and transmitting them to output
devices) is being performed and most GDI memory is allocated in the kernel address space, which is at a
real premium with /3GB.
