I was just on hold with my physician's office and had to listen to a recording talking about a couple of the doctors that practice at the office. One statement made about both doctors was that they are "Board-Certified by the American Board of..." Isn't that redundant? It just didn't sound right to me. If you're a doctor who is certified by a Board, then isn't it already obvious that you're Board-Certified?

I must be on a roll or something...3 posts in the past two days. That's got to be a record for me. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great weekend. I'll check back with you MAI TT'ers on Monday.

Actually, and particularly in the medical profession, there is legal and professional significance to being "board certified" versus the rather innocuous "certified". The doctor that treats me is "certified" as a "Doctor of Osteopathy", but he is not "board certified", and he has all of his patients sign an acknowledgement that we are aware of this distinction.

Dave, I can certainly understand that, but isn't it assumed that a medical professional is Board-Certified if they are certified by a Board?

Well, if it was used in a some sort of private conversation, it probably would be redundant. But in this case, we are talking legal terms, and they probably required by law to clarify their status to their patients. I don't know who would certify them if they are just "certified", a Board or some other entity. But since there is a distinction between a "certified" doctor and a "Board-Certified" doctor, they are right to make it clear. Which Board certified them is an additional piece of information.

A surgeon can be board-certified by, say, the American College of Surgeons, in which case, it's not at all redundant.
