I have a picture of a golfer swinging a club. I want all the background blurred and the golfer crisp. I know I use the filters to blur, but how do I preserve the golfter?

...you will have to mask him out, you can achieve this in quick mask mode by painting over the golfer...

...first though, make a duplicate of your current background layer and work on the top layer...

...make a selection using the pen tool by creating a path around the golfer and in the paths palette, make the path a selection by clicking the circle icon at the bottom left of the palette...

...with an active selection (marching ants), invert the selection so that the background is now selected, save the selection to a new channel so you can revert back to it (select > save selection). This will now be an alpha channel in the channels palette.

...now click on the 'add layer mask' icon at the bottom of the layers palette, this will create a layer mask for your top layer...

...select the image preview to the left of the mask on the top layer and the apply a blur filter to taste...

...you can also blur the mask a bit to get a smoother transition, also use a soft brush to fine tune the mask by painting either black, white or percentage greys...

...the bottom layer is the golfer coming through, the background will be the top layer...

...you can also adjust masks using the levels command, make sure you have it selected in the layers palette and press 'command/control L' an play about with the sliders...
