A coworker's son recently tried to install a cd-rewritable drive in her home computer. He said the hardware installation went fine, but when he ran the software, not only did it not work, now her monitor has trailing grey blurs from any character or line. I tried updating the driver but that didn't work. Before I invest in a new video card, has anyone experienced anything like this before?

When you say driver do you mean Burning software?
I ask this because writers usually run on standard ATAPI drivers already in windows and don't normally require any aditional software loading apart from the actual burning software.
If this is the case, is it still the same if the burning software is uninstalled?
At a guess I think it may be advantagous for you to remove and refit the graphics card just in case it was disturbed during the writer installation.
More info required, hope I've helped. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

sorry I didn't respond reight away, I was out of town. I re-installed the driver for the video card to no avail. The first thing I did was to reseat the card but that didn't help. They had already uninstalled the software before I looked at it, and returned the card to the dealer. Thanks for your help.

I've seen something like that before, for me it was with a low quality motherboard hooked up to a monitor that had been well used. Before you try changing out any hardware, change the monitor's refresh rate from within the display properties, see if that helps. Sometimes the output can be drastically different between various refresh rates.
