Anyone ever get this or recognize it upon booting? This screen shows it's ugly face bout 30 seconds in:

"STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system admin blah blah blah"

Any help appreciated, TYIA

Have you tried the Last Known Good Configuration?
Reboot your PC and seconds before you even see the XP splash screen, begin hitting F8 (this will take you into a screen where you can select the Last Known Good Configuration). Also, try booting the PC into Safe Mode (another option under the selective login screen after hitting F8). Another possibility is that a driver that loads during startup has corrupted the registry (while loading into memory)or the place in memory where the registry in loading could be bad (run a check on your physical RAM).

Holy Moley!

Never saw this before! So, I run the recovery console, it took about 1 hr and finished successfully (can you beleive it?)But anyhow, I get to a Windows logon, punch in various usernames and passwords, local or network, hit "ok" and i see this:
Loading your personal settings
then:
Saving your personal settings
then:
Right back where the frig i started athe the Welcome to Windows logon screen.

Anyone seen this before?

Try safe mode and let us know is that works. I have seem what you are experiencing if a virus or spyware highjacks your winlogon key. The problem will show up after you run a virus or spyware scan that removes the bad file that the winlogon key was change to.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
