WinXP pro sp3 and Office 2003 pro full install. I have a user, my boss, that when opening an excel file on the shared network drive, will get a blue screen and has to restart. Does not always happen and not always the same file. She opens files by starting excel first and then file, open. I have uninstalled and reinstalled office and ran chkdsk. Others do not have the problem when opening the same file.

Two things come to mind:

Under Tools, Options, General tab make sure Ignore other applications is unchecked.

With Excel closed find file with extension xlb and rename it with a different extension.

I should live a long time - I eat a lot of preservatives.

Check on the user's pc to see whether there are any networked drives or printers that are not currently used. It could be as simple as eliminating non-used (no longer used) network drives/devices/printers.

And if all of that fails, try disabling the antivirus or firewall long enough to test with a few files... if it works then, it's probably a case of a jumpy/overprotective/misconfigured security app.
