Hello all,

I am running Windows 2003 with an Adaptec 29320A-R (Raid is off and ) hooked to a Tandberg LTO-3 StorageLoader (HP LTO Ultium-3 drive) and we are running Symantec 11D. I just set this up so it has never worked.

It seems that everytime the device begins to read data from a tape I get the following error in a blue screen of death:

***Hardware Malfunction

Call your vendor for support

***The system has halted

I can backup a system just fine but when it starts to verify the backup I get the error above. The system will stay that state for about 15 minutes and then will reboot, after the system reboots the tape rewinds and unloads.

Any suggestions?

Update to latest Microsoft Storport drivers and also make sure you running the latest Adaptec Drivers.
Install latest Symantec Tape drivers

I have the same problem! I was wondering how GShort found out that the controller was faulty. We have the same controller and Backup Exec behaves exactly as GShort describes - the Blue Screen after verify begins. At times a verify will complete sucessfully, sometimes it will verify for a few minutes, other time it Blue Screens almost immediately. I have scoured the web, checked Symantec's forums as well as Adaptec's and have found nothing! Also, as far as the response posted by steveot which suggests to update the drivers - was this recommendation based on solving a similar problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well it has been a while but it came down to I couldn't find any other problems. I used the TD Kit from Tandenberg and did not find and errors and then I did a backup to disk and no errors. At that point I decide to replace the card and it worked.

Thanks very much GShort for your speedy reply! I was wondering about some basic configuration you have in your computer. If you would be so kind as to tell me the type of computer (I am using an HP Proliant DL145 G2 AMD Opteron 2.2 GHz 3 GB Ram) as well as the basic network configuration (we are using Broadcom Nextreme Gigabit and ATTO fibre connected to a SAN system). I will be calling Adaptec to find out some more info and I would like to use some of the configuration information you may have along with mine to see if there are any other similarities.

Again, many thanks for your response.

For hardware we are using a DL380 G5 with a single 2.33 Xeon Processor ,2.00 of RAM and a HP P400 Controller Card.

On the network we are using the built-in NC3773i Gigabit NICs but I can not tell you for sure if we had them in a network team when we were having the problem.

Don't think it matters but thought I would add it. The OS is running a on a pair mirrored disk, and the I have 4 other disks running in a Raid 5 configuration for file sharing purposes.
