Blue Light on 1100E phones

I've read in older posts that you are not able to use the Blue LED light opposite of the Red Message Light on the 1140/20/10 phones. Has anything been upgraded in software that will allow you to use this light for anything other than firmware? What is it's purpose on the BCM?

The blue lit is not functional when the phone is running UNIStim firmware. When the phone is running SIP firmware (which BCM does not support), then it is used to indicate the receipt of an instant message.
