Bloody Multihomed Servers HELP!!!!

Hi,
i have been searching through the forums about multihomed NT4 server(s) and even though i have understood a little better i'm still stuck!! here's my problem:

NT4 Server SP6a it has a intel NIC for internal use using 147.100.10.1 subnet 255.255.0.0. A 3 com NIC for external (adsl) use using 192.168.254.1 subnet 255.255.255.0. the 3com NIC is connected to a adsl(BT)router.

the first thing is i cannot setup the 3com card to use dhcp as the option is grayed out ( the bt router is a dchp server). there is an artical which is hard to find Q184331 which explains how to setup dchp on a multihomed server for a 2nd NIC but this did not work so i'd thought i'd setup the 3com card manually as stated above. i have enabled ip forwarding and installed RIP. i have set the gateway on the 3com card to the address of the router and have set the gateway of the intel card to the 3com card. Now heres the bit that really grits my shit in the dns options when i configure the 3 com card to point to the isp dns server and give it a host name and domain name the configuration copies itself to intel card WHY? i'd thought i'd humor it by continuing so i tried connecting to the web but i get " cannot find server or DNS error" i can ping the router but i cannot ping anything outside the router e.g yahoo.com. So is this a DNS problem or a routing problem.

thanks for the reply. at first For the 3com card i left the configuration for the bindings as default i.e left it alone. But i did notice that it had tcpip bound to it (not a problem) but under tcpip it had dchp server, i was thinking that this needs to be disabled as it needs to get a dchp request from the router. so i disabled dhcp server binding. also i made sure that only tcpip was bound to it. this had no effect so i set it back to default. what do i need bound to the 3com card?

I dont know much about this stuff.
I'd try binding the external nic to TCP/IP only.
the external nic should contain all ISP dns addresses.
let the internal nic (gateway to the external) pick up for dhcp resolution since it will be the dhcp server.
The DNS information copies itself to the other card.
this is normal. Youre setting attributes for DNS. DNS is DNS thereby any entry you make in DNS will show up in DNS even if you have 10 nics.

If youre using proxy only the proxy server will be able to ping beyond the router.
no workstation using the proxy to get out will be able to ping beyond it. Doesnt sound like youre using proxy.

This sounds like some kind wan link addressing thing so im not sure what youre doing.

Thanks once again for the reply... The reason i ask about the dns on the NICs it appears with an message regarding it will give one of the nics a different host name as the host names are the same. Is this a normal NT4 behaviour? We've now got it working so the server and clients can access the web BUT the router is meant to give the 3com (external) NIC its ip settings but at the moement they are forced. Any ideas on how to setup the 3com for dhcp. like i said before there is a artical q184331 which talks about setting up dhcp client along with dhcp server using a registry hack but this does not work. BTW dont know if it makes much difference but the router is using NAT.

Or a true router?
It sounds like you have a server set up as a router??
Give me more info and I'll see if i can confuse both of us even more.

The topology is as follows windows 98 clients connected to a win nt4 server. the nt4 server is connected to a adsl router. so yes the nt4 server is a router i.e routing internet request to the adsl router. We are using a weird 3rd party proxy software. Thats not the problem thou as i cannnot setup the 3com card to use dchp as the option is grayed out. any ideas????? Thanks for your reply.

The NIC connected to the DSL router uses DHCP, unless your ISP has assigned you a fixed IP address(es). It should also get it's DNS server automatically (from the ISP). The NIC connected to the internal LAN must have a static IP address (192.168.x.x), use 127.0.0.1 for DNS, and run WINS service with the 192.168.x.x address for the 98 clients. thanks for the reply yokydoky and what you have said is true BUT 1. For the 2nd NIC the option for dchp is grayed out 2. the dns setting seem to copy themselfs from one nic to another i.e dns servers, host and domain name. any ideas?

Right, if you have an IP address hard coded in, DHCP will be unavailable. DNS on a multihomed machine is complex and I've already told you about all I know. I don't believe you need to be running a DNS server at all - use autodetect on the DSL-connected NIC to locate your ISP's DNS server. Name resolution on your internal network is handled by B-Node or WINS, depending on your config, and doesn't requre DNS. If the config is migrating from one NIC to the other, I don't have a handy explanation... Y. Doky - "Manager" of Systems
