Given that blogs are communication tools and many companies are encouraging employees to have one (as opposed to a flat bio page), it seemed like this was the right forum (based on the board's description: "...related topics to improve our ability to communicate effectively and help project the right image") to point out what I just noticed:

I think it's odd that there is no Forum on Tek-Tips for blogging (at least, when I typed blog and blogging into the 'Find a Forum' search bar, I got nothing). People could share tips on improving their blogs or ask for advice on blog manager software, etc.

Certainly, many of the contributors to this board must have blogs or read blogs and are considering starting one of their own. (?)

I have recently followed one link to another and have "uncovered" a ton of wild content out there, not to mention some very cool sites.

I guess I'm just rambling, so I'll ask a question:

You bloggers out there... what are you doing? Where are you learning the techniques to blog design? How are you making your ISP and software choices? Post links to your blogs. I'd really like to see a variety of blogs to learn from.

P.S., CC - if this post is outside the intended scope of this board, don't hesitate to let me know. I know you won't! :)

Topic is fine with me - and it's a good question.

My blog is linked in my signature. I use dasBlog and host it myself on Win2k3. Probably one of the most popular blogging engines out there is .TEXT

I mostly write content for Visual FoxPro. I use it as a vehicle to provide information and downloads to the Visual FoxPro Community (a way for me to give back for everything I've been given). I write entries for it pretty much the same way I write posts in here, pulling from my own personal and professional experience and doing my best to provide something of value. I allow comments on my blog (some don't do this), because I think it is good to allow people to interact, and it also gives them a way to provide me with feedback without having to send me an email.

I don't know how well that answers your questions, but that's my take on it anyways.

As to a forum on blogs on TT... I don't know why D&D have never added a forum on blogs. Perhaps you could email them and ask?

On a related note, I'd like to see an RSS Feed for Tek-Tips... it was suggested over a year ago, but so far nothing has come of it that I know of. It is all about communication, and one of the ways to improve communication is to increase access and allow it easier for people to stay informed... RSS and News Readers are really good at this.

I'm a staff writer on another technical forum. The site integrates blogs, and staff writers can "feature" certain blog entries, which are then syndicated. Google News is one of the subscribers, so it's often fun to see an entry become the number 1 result in a Google News search.

I also used WordPress on a poetry site, where I integrated blogging with haibun, a Japanese poetry form. I called it "haiblog", and it went well, for awhile. I've since disbanded that site, however.

I'm not sure that a blogging forum would be a good idea. Many of the issues raised in it would be a good fit for other ones that already exist - HHTML & CSS, Web Designers, PHP, Ethics in the Workplace. The only new issues we might attract would be highly specific questions about particular packages - WordPress, Movable Type, etc. They tend to have their own, pretty well-supported, support fora, so I'm not sure TT would add much value.

Chris,

I was thinking more about blog DESIGN and commenting on other designs, rather than discussing blog content (except perhaps on the meta-level: "I've seen this topic in a lot of blogs, is this really something important or is it a passing fad?").

I know I'd really like to beef up my blog and I'm so impressed with others' that I've seen that I haven't even given out the address of mine yet! So far, I'm just using it like a self-motivational journal.

Others,

Thanks for the input. I'm going to check out your blogs and those tools that you mentioned (when I get home! ;) ).
