I did a BL check on one of my competitors web site and what I noticed is they have thousand of back links and most of them are Blogs. My question is, could this be a way to create BL for a web site to gain good ranks in google or any other SE’s or would this be a waist of time? It looks to be that this is helping this particular web site because they are ranking rather well in google. What do you all think? Thank you in advance.

Blogging and Back Links do they work?

if you intend to have a weblog for the right reasons, and you keep adding useful and relevant contents etc, then it's a good idea and useful.
If you want to use a weblog purely for link pop then it's a bad idea because it will soon a bind to keep up to date and become a liability for conversions.

Chris, I think he's suggesting visiting other peoples' blogs, posting a comment, and getting a link back to his site.
I don't think it will do any harm to your SEO, though I think you may be overestimating the benefits to be had from backlinks - there are probably other factors in play. Just make sure that the comments you post are relevant to the blog in question, and that you aren't just spamming them with stuff like "Get your discount widgets from Spamming only pisses people off, "doing the right thing" may attract direct customers from other readers of the blog.
Incidentally, note that both Chris and myself use this forum as a source for backlinks - by including our URLs in our sigs. Something to consider in addition to the blogs.
