Blocking web plugins on Win 98 1

Hopefully I am posting to the corret forum. If this isn't the case, please tell me where I should be posting.

Is it possible to block web plugins from being installed/downloaded? I have a few computers that are public access and people continually install crap such as eAnthology. I've looked into some "desktop lockdown" software but perhaps I need to keep looking because it is uanble to perform the needed task. I have enabled policy files and this has locked it down to a small degree... For example people cannot run EXEs unless they are in the list. However, it seems this doesn't apply to web plugins.

Well thanks for the suggestion carr. Unfortunately that didn't do the trick... I can't download files as intended by the registry hack but plugins (such as eAnthology) still can be downloaded/installed... when I use the term "plugin" I mean any software installed by that pop up window that basically says

Security Warning - do you want to install and run xxxxxxxxxx signed on xx/xx/xx and distributed by xxxxxxxx Check to always trust content from xxxxx
YES - NO - MORE INFO

You know what I'm talking about, right? I can give the full message if need be. Would you call that a "plugin" install? Also, any more suggestions to fix it??

Yep..Now I see where you're going.
You might try loading their HOSTS files, therefore blocking the ads. I'm not sure if this is going to fend off the actual pop-ups (like for Gator, etc.), but it'd be worth a try.

Sounds like you are talking about activex controls. They are stored in C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files. Go to this folder in explorer and right click the folder, choose properties, and then set the read only attribute. This should stop the installation. Don't know how savvy your users are, so they may easily undo this, but it doesn't cost anything to try.

Well I tried both suggestions and still nothing... eanthology still comes thru... Looks like the only option at this point is to give up...

Try Spyware Blaster. Works like a treat for me, and stops those nasty pop-install ActiveX windows. It is also free:
