I'm working on locking down IE via the registry on 250+ Windows 98 workstations. I am combining registry settings to affect the explorer shell as well as IE and have it almost to my satisfaction. I have the local drive hidden and inaccessible (nearly).
I've found, however, that there is one method of accessing the local drive that I am unable to block. A user can right click on a link in the IE Links toolbar, access its properties, and simply type: C:\ in the URL field. When applied, the system updates it to "file:///c:/". When the link is subsequently clicked, it opens up Windows explorer with full access to the C drive. This only works through a link (i.e. if you type the same URL in the address bar it generates the appropriate error message that the access to the device is disabled). All other "hacks" around my restrictions are effectively blocked (that I know of, anyway).
I can disable right clicking in the browser's main window (the HTML context window), but I can't disable right clicking in the browser's toolbar. Does anyone know of a way to block access to a link's properties (short of removing the links - I need to keep the links available per upper management that I support). Or is there a way (either in the shell or IE) to disable right clicking in the toolbar via the registry?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks!
