I am trying to find out the correct method of blocking 3rd Party Billing and collect calls from coming through our phone system.
our local provider claims that it is not possible from their end.
We are using DID and CO trunks from Verizon to an Nortel Option 11c.
It seems they should be able to prevent these type of calls.
Does anybody have any thoughts or ideas on how this is supposed to be accomplished?

Verizon should be able to block collect calls from their end. They should also be able to block some 3rd party billing calls. However, you can also block numbers from the Option 11 through NARS and BARS. You will probably want to call in some vendor support to do this.

Hairball1,
If you are trying to block 3rd party & collect calls from the telco side, yes you can. All the ILECs have known how to do this for the last 40 years! I always put this option on all my customers lines, either when establishing service or when making changes. If the customer does not accept collects why allow them from the telco. There have been problems over the years with the alternative operator services industry. They get greedy and try to bill all kinds of crap to customer numbers, especially DID numbers. As long as the service or lines have the reject indication you should not have a problem getting calls billed to the numbers removed and credited back. Also the CLECs should be able to do the same thing, but I don't have any experience with any of them in this area.

I use to do telco stuff for a paging company and had some intertesting toll fraud cases. We even found one of the employees billing 3rd party to their DID station number!

It pays to actually read the phone bill and understand what you are being billed for.

Hope this helps!
