I've used several transparency blending modes in my CS2 document to achieve a layered appearance. The file prints OK from my desktop but proofs from printhouse don't show the blending effects, namely screen and overlay. When I do Overprint View I can see the problem, but how to resolve? Pdf doesn't print effects, I even tried exporting as EPS, no luck.

Appreciate any suggestions, comments - thanks in advance

In the transparency window try changing the mode. Start with Normal as that usually does the trick. When you eport to pdf, make sure that transparency flattening is set to High and use the Press setting on teh export.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

I don't get it. If I set the transparency mode to Normal I lose the effect that I'm after. Is that the solution?

This probably is too late to help you, but I'll throw it out here anyway.

When working with transparency effects in InDesign, the further down the blending mode list you go, the more "iffy" the results will be. I have not had many problems with those particular blend modes: Chances are that the RIP used at the print house couldn't handle the transparency.

So, one option is to maybe work with the transparency effect in Photoshop. Although I would normally recommend not to flatten the file, you might in this case which takes out the transparency issue.

Since the work has been done in InDesign already, you might export the file to a PDF (Acrobat version 4) and see if they can RIP it. Version 4 does not retain transparency so their RIP will not need to deal with it. If there are going to be issues, you'll see them in the resulting PDF before you ever send them off.
