blending 2 layers into 1

Yes.
Just click on one layer(in the floating pallete) and then click on the link box(next to the 'eye' icon in the pallette) in the other layer(a chain icon will appear).
Then either press ctrl+e or go to 'Layer' (top), and click on merge linked.
