\hello strange problem here

I've got Arcserve backing up the systems OK, but it keeps asking for a blank media before it starts. How do you set it to overwrite whatever tape you give it?? I have set the Option which looks for the correct tape, then a blank tape, then any tape, and thought this would make it do this, but it still asks for a blank tape. The only complication I can see is that there is a media pool which contains the 5 tapes in the tape changer. I have tried setting the backup with these tapes mounted and dismounted but it still asks for a blank tape.

any ideas?

Cheers

I think the problem is that you're trying to use tapes that are in the save set of a pool. If you aren't using the pool, I would just delete it. If you are using the pool, remove the tapes you want to use from the pool and put them into the scratch set of the default pool or whatever pool your current job is using.

Ive been runnning into the same problem with my backup tapes. NO matter what I do, if I dont recreate a backup job from scratch, it will NOT run unless i have a blank tape formatted for that job in the machine. I dont use pools etc. at least not knowingly.

You can also try erasing (not formatting) the tape before you run the job--this usually works for me.

Run the Media Prediction report. This will tell you what tape ArcServe wants for its upcoming jobs.

I suspect that the problem you are having will stem from the media pools. Pepper's right about moving them from save-set to scratch-set. One of the default rotation schemes should do the trick for you and will keep you from manually doing this.

Erasing tapes manually works, but it kind of defeats the purpose of having a full blown backup system like ArcServe in conjunction with a tape library. Unfortunately, I hear CA telling me to just erase a tape as well...apparently it's an accepted fix.

Keep us posted on how this goes fraserd
