I humble myself before the NetWorker Gurus:

System Specs
============
Legato Notworker 6.0
RedHat Linux kernel 2.2.17-14smp
ADIC Scalar 100 Tape Library
Quantum DLT8000

Problem
=======
When I load up the tape library with brand new tapes and try to label them from the command line or GUI it doesn't label. But if I put a tape in that I first write to using tar (I verified that the device and tape is fine, I can read/write to it using tar) and then issue the command to relabel, it works fine.

eg:
nsrjb -v -HE #initailize jukebox state

nsrjb -C # get the current volume/slot list

...outputs...

Jukebox ADIC_TOP:
slot volume pool barcode volume id recyclable
1: 000001(R) Default 000001 91676161 yes
...snip
7: 000007(R) Default 000007 94799873 yes
8: -* -
...snip
30: -* -
*not registered in the NetWorker media data base

drive 1 (/dev/nst0) slot :

...then...

nsrjb -v -L -S 8 # label volume in slot 8

...outputs...

nsrjb: Looking at drive `/dev/nst0' id 0.
drive = /dev/nst0, id = 0, reserved = 1, busy = 0, mode = 0
Jukebox handle being opened at port scsidev@1.6.0
box_inventory:
Jukebox handle being closed at port scsidev@1.6.0
box_inventory_free:
Jukebox handle being opened at port scsidev@1.6.0
Slot `8' is being loaded into drive `/dev/nst0'
box_display: `-' for drive `/dev/nst0'
Jukebox handle being closed at port scsidev@1.6.0
load sleep for 5 seconds
nsrjb: About to read label on /dev/nst0
nsrjb: About to write label 000008 on /dev/nst0
nsrjb: About to eject volume from /dev/nst0
eject sleep for 5 seconds
Jukebox handle being opened at port scsidev@1.6.0
Unloading jukebox: drive `/dev/nst0' into slot `8'
Jukebox handle being closed at port scsidev@1.6.0
unload sleep for 5 seconds
nsrjb: About to eject volume from /dev/nst0
eject sleep for 5 seconds
Jukebox handle being opened at port scsidev@1.6.0
Unloading jukebox: drive `/dev/nst0' into slot `8'
Jukebox handle being closed at port scsidev@1.6.0
unload sleep for 5 seconds

everything seems fine look at list with a nsrjb -C

...outputs...

slot volume pool barcode volume id recyclable
7: 000007(R) Default 000007 94799873 yes
8: -* -

I even did a inventory on that volume nsrjb -I -S 8
and still get the same.

The nsr log shows:
5/18/01 19:27:09 nsrd: media warning: /dev/nst0 reading: Input/output error

but the admin manual pg352 says this is because nsr is trying to read an unlabeled volume.

Any suggestions, tips, advice, money, better backup software would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks muchly :-{}

Im afraid i am not answering your question, i am adding my own little rant to your list
I get similiar problems when trying to label brand new (out the packet) tapes in one of my jukeboxes
its an ARC DIamond Changer, using DDS3 tapes
for some reason unknown to me, it says that the slot with the blank tape in it, is "empty"
( i can tar to the tape, etc etc, but as soon as i attempt to use either the GUI interface or the command line, i get the message below)

[root@crypt bin]# nsrjb -v -L -S 4
setting verbosity level to `1'
nsrjb: Jukebox error: Mon 10:51:06 slot `4' is empty

however, if i take a recycled tape and pop it in the same slot, it reads fine, and will happily write a label to the tape...
Im very new at Legato, and have been dealing with Arcserve backups before being given the task of evaluating Legato....
I am very impressed with Legato ( compared to my Arcserve woes and nail bitings) and really would like to sort this annoying little foible out, so that i can go ahead and start backups on production machines...

muchos gratzias in advance :-I
