I suddenly can't access any items such as accounts in vanguard or any secure items. If I try to get to hotmail I get a blank screen showing page is done loading, a totally white page. Spoke with comcast cable provider and they walked me through some changes in security settings and a download of java to no avail. Then they suggested I re-load ie6, which I downloaded but when I try to install it states I have a newer version and it can't load. I used removal to remove ie and on reboot it doesn't show as a program I have to remove but still can't install new ie6. I am thinking this issue is beyond that anyway, as I also have no system restore. If I choose it it just comes up as a white empty box. Same with user accounts, an empty white box. Sigh. Any ideas? I just upgraded to xp and all was well earlier today. Should I re-install xp on top of this installation?
Sorry if this is a duplicate, i tried to post but don't see it so am trying again. Thanks!

Do a search on your hard drive for ie6setup.exe. With luck you'll find the one you downloaded (which doesn't work), and one in a folder called windows update files. If its there, try reinstalling with that one. If it works, go to Download and install spybot, then update it and eradicate any spywares, I also suggest an updated virus scan. This is to get rid of any malwares/viruses that might be running.

You might also try a different browser such as netscape.

With the amount of trouble you are having it might be worthwhile to cut your losses and do a clean install of XP after reformatting your drive. You will have a lot less problems than going down the upgrade path.

Backup any data you require to be saved.

Read this article for the preparation check list.

HOW TO: Prepare to Upgrade Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition to Windows XP(Q316639)

Use your XP CD (Upgrade version) and perform a clean install.

HOW TO: Partition and Format a Hard Disk in Windows XP (Q313348)

Read the paragraph,
"How to Partition and Format Your Hard Disk by Using Windows XP Setup."

Early on in the install you will be asked to show XP a qualifying product. It will require a 98 or ME etc. CD to be inserted in your CD drive.

Hopefully you will find not carrying the excess baggage from your old operating system, will give you a smoother ride.

After you have installed XP, protect yourself with a firewall and any virus software you have. Go online and update your virus scanner and then go to Windows Updates and get any updates, including SP1 if it is not included with your XP CD.

If you just want to try a repair installation.

Some general things to try first.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
